Alstonia scholaris, commonly known as the "Devil's Tree," is an evergreen tree belonging to the family Apocynaceae. Native to the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and certain parts of Australia, this tree is widely distributed and can be found in various tropical and subtropical regions.

Plant Description:

  1. Size: The Alstonia scholaris tree can grow to a height of 20 to 40 meters (65 to 130 feet) tall, depending on the growing conditions and age.

  2. Leaves: The leaves are arranged oppositely on the branches and are simple, smooth, and glossy. They are usually 15 to 30 centimeters (6 to 12 inches) long and 6 to 12 centimeters (2.5 to 4.5 inches) wide. The leaves are dark green on the upper surface and pale green on the underside.

  3. Flowers: The tree produces fragrant white flowers that are small and tubular in shape. They typically grow in clusters and have five lobes. The flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators.

  4. Fruits: After the flowers are pollinated, they develop into elongated seed pods that are about 15 to 25 centimeters (6 to 10 inches) long. The pods are slender and contain numerous seeds with tufts of silky hairs that aid in seed dispersal by the wind.

  5. Bark: The bark of Alstonia scholaris is grayish-brown and smooth when young, but it becomes rougher and fissured with age.

  6. Latex: Like many plants in the Apocynaceae family, the Devil's Tree produces a milky latex substance.
